MY PRIORITES
Meeting diverse needs in the classroom
Every learner is unique. Students come to us from different backgrounds, with different strengths, learning challenges, and different aspirations for their future. A one-size-fits-all approach to educating the 5500+ students in our district leaves too many students behind. I’m proud of GHAPS’ initiatives that are leveling the playing field for all students—ensuring each has the support and scaffolding he or she needs to achieve, whether that’s through vocational training, special education, alternative education, differentiated instruction, before- and after-school tutoring, AP coursework, dual enrollment programs, arts programming, connections for addressing the needs of student who are homeless or experiencing food insecurity, and more. Understanding and advocating for the needs of all students is a key focus in my work on the board.
Creating a welcoming environment for all
Creating a positive learning environment for each student is embedded in GHAPS’ mission. And that starts with honoring our differences and creating a space where all students feel safe and welcome. A safe learning environment is a prerequisite for productive learning. Students who feel they’re a valued part of their school community are less likely to be disruptive in class, more likely to attend school regularly, more motivated to learn, and more likely to succeed. I’m proud of our district’s intentional work in creating a fair and positive space for learning—whether that’s through anti-bullying initiatives, cultural awareness programming, diversity initiatives, celebrating student achievements, or the simple act of a warm, welcoming greeting from staff as students enter the school. A supportive school environment is the foundation for success and I’m committed to growing our efforts to achieve that for all students.
Investing in our schools
Buildings age, technology becomes obsolete, and teaching practices are continuously being updated. We’re proud that five of our elementary schools have earned the enviable National Blue Ribbon status, but we cannot rest on our laurels, we must continue to judiciously invest in our district. The majority of our schools were built in the 1960s and 1970s at a time when education meant rows of desks facing a blackboard. Modern learning environments are infused with technology, built to support collaborative and individual work, and designed for staff and student safety. I support responsible investment in our infrastructure, technology, and staff so ensure our district and its students continue to receive an award-winning education.
